FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Tandeck Alternative Decking?
Tandeck Alternative Decking is manufactured from a proprietary blend of plastic resins and additives that offer exceptional and longer lasting properties than traditional wood lumber and wood/plastic composite products. This resin-based product does not include any wood particles and therefore cannot absorb or swell due to moisture. It will never rot or be damaged by insects and is highly stain resistant.

What colors does Tandeck come in?
Tandeck Decking comes in seven colors. Oak Color, Gray, Dark Gray, Sand, Weathered Wood, Cedar, and White.

Why can't I find Tandeck at my local lumber yard or home center?
The plastic in Tandeck HDPE (high density polyethylene) is more expensive than the plastic in wood composites or PVC decking. In order to deliver Tandeck at a price competitive with premium wood composites and less than PVC decking Tandeck is sold direct to the customer. In short you can cut out the middle man and get a higher quality product for less.

Is Tandeck made from recycled materials?
Yes, Tandeck contains a high percentage of recycled HDPE (high density polyethylene) plastic material – that's the kind found in milk bottles.

What is the difference between Tandeck and “Composite” Decking?
Leading composite decking is made from a mixture of waste wood fibers and recycled plastics. The weak link in all composites is the wood! The wood fillers make composite decking susceptible to fading, staining and swelling due to absorbed moisture. Tandeck Decking is made from mostly recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic – the kind found in milk bottles. Tandeck contains no wood fillers and cannot rot, peel, weather or blister.

Will the color of Tandeck products fade or change color once it is installed?
Composite decks have a reputation for quickly fading after exposure to the elements. Tandeck has special Ultra-Violet (UV) stabilizers added to help protect the color and the integrity of the HDPE plastics. And because it contains no wood fibers to weather, Tandeck will maintain its new color for years with only a slight change in color over the long life of your deck.

What kind of warranty comes with Tandeck?
We are so confident that your Tandeck system will give you years of beauty and function with minimum maintenance, that we provide a limited 50 year warranty on properly installed systems.

Can I install a Tandeck myself?
Yes, anyone with tools and ability to use them can build a beautiful Tandeck deck.

How much does TanDeck cost?
Tandeck products cost more than treated pine and cedar wood and about the same as premium hardwood and composite decking products. With the reduced maintenance costs and long life of the product, your extra investment will pay for itself many times over the life of the product.

How do I care for my Tandeck Deck?
You can use liquid dish soap with hot water applied with a deck brush is all that will be needed for most spills. This product is very difficult to stain. Coffee, barbeque sauce, a dropped hamburger, steak or even red wine will not stain TanDeck.

Will chemicals or other cleaners harm the TanDeck surface?
All house hold cleaners are safe for Tandeck product.

What about power washing?
We do not recommend using a power washer on your Tandeck. The deck surface is tougher than a regular wood deck, but can be damaged if the pressure setting is too high. Tandeck is not warranted against damage done by power washing.

What about mildew on Tandeck?
Tandeck is not made with wood additives like composite decking so it cannot grow mold beneath the surface of the product. Any surface if exposed to a dark and damp environment has the ability to grow surface mold. If Tandeck is in this type of environment, surface mold may grow on the outside, but can be easily cleaned with bleach-based cleaners and a brushing with no harmful effect to the Tandeck surface.

Should I be concerned about surface scratches on TanDeck?
TanDeck is very durable and highly impact-resistance. It will resist most scratches and is designed to stay looking new for years. However, as in all flooring surfaces, it can be scratched if subjected to abrasive objects and severe treatment.

Can static electricity be generated when walking across the deck floor?
Yes. In some instances, deck owners have reported generating static electricity when walking across their decks, similar to walking across a carpet in the wintertime. This is a naturally occurring phenomenon that will dissipate. This only occurs in very dry conditions and usually on newer decks. Tandeck uses anti-static agents in our decking to minimize this problem. Homeowners can dampen the Tandeck surface to eliminate this problem if necessary.

Is TanDeck slippery when wet?
Tandeck is no more slippery than painted or finished wood. The embossed wood grain on Tandeck deck planks increases traction and reduces slipperiness. During the winter, salt and other anti-ice products can be safely applied directly to your Tandeck to melt ice or frost.

Will Tandeck get hot in direct sun?
Testing has shown that Tandeck colors are cooler than unpainted treated wood (ACQ) and significantly cooler than wood painted the same color. Keep in mind that darker colors will absorb heat and lighter colors will reflect heat.
